“Are you guys all happy?”
Ask the person next to you. “Are you happy?”
There are not many people who answer with confidence, “Yes! I am happy!” Why can’t we live with happiness? Why do so many people feel unhappy!
신학자 폴 틸리히는 “존재의 용기(The Courage to Be”라는 책에서 이렇게 말합니다.
Theologian Paul Tillich says in a book called The Courage to Be, “The misery of the ancients came from the matter of fate and death.” They accepted everything as fate.
In the Middle Ages, people said, “Unhappy is because of sin and punishment. All human misery is the curse of God given because of sin. They lived trembling before that judgment.
They thought the Black Death was because of the curse. War was because of the curse. Even the flood was because of the curse.
Then what about modern people? “The cause of modern people’s misery comes from the meaninglessness of life,” the theologian says. It’s not that they are without food. Or even without a home. But they’ve lost the purpose and meaning for life.
Why is that? There could be various reasons. Greed is plentiful but never filled. So, you can’t rest! You have to keep on trying! As a result, there is no fellowship. No fellowship with family. There’s a lack of intimate relationship with God. So lonely and empty! When I think about all this, it’s because we lost thanksfulness in our hearts.
Brothers and Sisters, Our God is a good Father. He wants to give us good things. He wants us to be happy. Jesus said, “If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:11)
Imperfect parents like us want to give their children something good, right? How much more is God? God wants to give us the best. The key to receiving the best that God has prepared is giving thanks to Him
Let’s look at the verse 20 of today’s text. It says “always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” How can I thank you for everything? How can I always be grateful? That’s ridiculous. Yes. It doesn’t make sense! How can a parent who lost a child be grateful? How can someone thank for a sudden terminal cancer sentence? How can you be grateful if you suddenly lose your freedom and go to jail? When those things happen, thanks never comes out of our mouths.
But if we think so, in fact, we have no choice but to complain about everything. It’s natural to always be caught up in complaints. Because there are always problems and difficulties in our lives. Brothers and Sisters! Does our Lord not know our situation? Some people say, “the Lord doesn’t know my situation!” Is that true?
No! It’s not true! Is there any one who has many unhappy conditions like the Lord?
Since He was born, people in the neighborhood glanced at him and said, “You are an illegitimate child!” None of us was born in a stable without a home and lying in a manger. What about life? Jesus lost his father early on and had to take care of the family. Jesus had four younger brothers. At least two younger sisters. So, Jesus was responsible for the livelihood of at least eight members. Jesus had to face a lot of curses and jealousy. He was accused. He was betrayed by a disciple. He was hit by a whip. He had to bear the cross. It seems like there were not many happy memories in His earthly life.
However! How did the Lord feel? He was the happiest person in the. Because the Lord has always been thankful. No matter how difficult the circumstances were, they could never take away the gratitude in His heart. No one could take away the happiness of our Lord.
A famous Korean poet Yun Dong-joo says in the poem “Cross”.
Like to happy Jesus Christ/ If the cross is allowed/ I will shed my blood like Blooming flower/ under the Dark sky.
Here, the poet described Jesus as “happy Jesus Christ.” That’s right! Jesus himself felt that He lived the happiest life. What was the secret of happiness of Jesus? It’s thankfulness!
The Lord was always grateful to see God’s will come true. Jesus prayed to God. “I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do”
In the Book of Psalms God says: “He who sacrifices thank offerings honors me, and he prepares the way so that I may show him the salvation of God.” Jesus was thankful in every situation. He was grateful for the work God gave Him. So, He lived to glorify God.
If Jesus who had so many difficulties and troubles could live a thankful life, could we be thankful today? Could we be happy too? That’s right! We all can be happy!
Life is a choice. Thankfulness is a choise. Happiness is also a choice. No matter how difficult a situation may be, the happiness of someone who chooses to be thankful can never be prevented. But we can’t make someone happy who choose to be unhappy.
Abraham Lincoln said, “Most people are as happy as being thankful in their hearts.” The Apostle Paul always thanked for everything. So, he could be happy even in Roman prison. The environment cannot be ignored, but we are as happy as we are being thankful.
Not only that but Gratitude brings miracles to life.
When does your miracle happen? Miracles happen when there is a problem. There is no miracle without problems. If the problem is small, the miracle is small. If the problem is big, the miracle is large. But we hate the problem. When you encounter a problem, you are discouraged and frustrated. But if you are thankful when you encounter a problem, the problem presents a miracle. The way to make a problem a miracle is to bring it to God and pray. Thank God even for problems. God then turns the problem into a miracle.
The miracle of feeding five thousand people happened when they faced a big problem. It’s a big problem that five thousand people are hungry. What did Jesus do then? He thanked God with five barley cakes and two fish in my hand. Then a miracle happened. Everyone ate full. And there were 12 baskets left.
One day Lazarus, who was close to Jesus in Bethany, died. The death of a friend is a big challenge. Big problem. What did Jesus do when he went? He thanked God in Lazarus’s grave. All the people were crying. But Jesus gave thanks to God. Then the dead Lazarus became alive again. Brothers and sisters! Pray when you face difficulties! Give thanks to God. You will experience miracles.
Finally, thanksgiving is the way to build good relationships.
Joy is contained in relationships. God blesses through relationships. Being thankful creates good relationships, helping to reconcolie them and bringing peace. We like people who are grateful. A thankful nature is an attractive nature. A thankful nature is a beautiful nature. A grateful character is a warm and tender character. The best way to have a good relationship is being thankful. Thank the people around you. Give thanks to God. You will experience the blessings of intimate relationships. You will also experience the happiness and blessings of God through that intimate relationship.
Brothers and sisters! I will conclude the sermon. I sincerely wish all of you to live through the riches of happiness and miracles that God gives through thankfulness.
